This weeks agenda and reminders 11/28


In ELA/Reading we are reading An Egg is an Egg This story's phonics lesson focuses on sounds of y(long e and long i). Grammar for this unit deals with verbs

*Review these concepts with your child by:
-having your child write sentences and circle the verbs

-having your child find verbs in TV commercials, on websites, etc.
-having your child find words with the long e and long i sound for y in magazines, newspapers, billboards, etc. and making a book with these new found words.
-use the spelling games from:  http://www.quia.com/jg/1096779.html and http://www.spellingcity.com/mmoon1916/
-making flashcards to read and repeat(spelling words, sight words, amazing words).
**Repetition is key!!

In Math, we will be focusing on shapes(flats and solids) and fractions(mainly whole, half, and fourths).
*You can review these concepts with your child by:
-having them tell you how to split foods in halves and fourths

-giving your child items with which they have to split into equal amounts
-having your child draw 2 dimensional (flat) shapes
-having a shape hunt (in the grocery store, car, mall etc. where your child has to find a shape that you call out)

Odyssey is also a website that can be utilized at home to reinforce concepts taught in school.  Each teacher places activities that  deal with the concepts studied in the classroom.  Remember repetition is key!

In ELA/Reading we are reading The Farmer and the Hat. This story's phonics lesson focuses on CVCe(long a). Grammar will deal with proper nouns.view these concepts with your child by:
-having your child write or say words that name things and then giving you a specific name for something.

i.e.:  school - Factory Shoals Elementary.
-having your child find words that name specific things while driving, shopping (noun hunt).
-having your child find long a CVCe words in magazines, newspapers, billboards, etc. and making a book with these new found words.

-making flashcards to read and repeat(spelling words, sight words, amazing words).

In Math, we will be focusing on addition.

*You can review these concepts with your child by:
-using a deck of cards to add two digit numbers and have your child find the sum.
-using food (cereal, cookies, macaroni noodles, spaghetti noodles, etc.) to have your child made addition sentences.

-using addtion flash cards to review addition facts ($1 at the Dollar Tree(proper noun :))
-utilizing xtramath.org

*You can review these concepts with your child by:
-having your child write or say words that name things.

-having your child cut out pictures from magazines that name things.
-having your child find words that name things while driving or shopping (noun hunt).
-having your child find sh and th words in magazines, newspapers, billboards, etc. and making a book with these new found words.

-making flashcards to read and repeat(spelling words, sight words, amazing words).

In Math, we will be focusing on 10 more and 10 less, 1 more and 1 less.

*You can review these concepts with your child by:
-using a deck of cards to form two digit numbers and have your child identify 10 more, 10 less, 1 more 1 less.
-using food (cereal, cookies, macaroni noodles, spaghetti noodles, etc.) have them count out 10 more, 10 less, 1 more, 1 less than a given amount.

-using pennies and dimes to show 10 more, 10 less, 1 more, 1 less.


In Science, we will continue with magnets. Social Studies will continue our unit on Folktales (Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan, John Henry, Annie Oakley, and Davy Crockett)

-having your child tell or write you sentences with the purpose of giving information or making a statement.
-having your child find sort e words and words with initial blends in magazines, newspapers, billboards, etc. and making a book with these new found words.

-making flashcards to read and repeat.

In Math, we will be focusing on greater than, less than and equal to.
*You can review these concepts with your child by:

-comparing numbers in a deck of cards, money amounts, amounts of food, etc.

In Science, we will be continue with magnets. Social Studies will begin a new unit on Folktales (Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan, John Henry, Annie Oakley, and Davy Crockett)

In ELA/Reading we are reading The Fox and the Kit. This story's phonics lesson focuses on -s and -ing endings on action words. Grammar will deal with word order in sentences.
*You can review these concepts with your child by:
-writing verbs on index cards and having your child add -s and -ing endings
-writing out sentences, cutting them up and have your child put them in order
For Math, we will be focusing on place value to 50(some teacher may choose to go further for students ready for that concept)
*You can review these concepts with your child by:
-having them tell you which number is in the tens place and the ones place for numbers you see
In Science, we will be continue with magnets and Social Studies, will continue to focus on the five themes of geography.

This weeks agenda and reminders 8/29

In ELA/Reading we are reading The Big Blue Ox(p. 56-65). This story's phonics lesson focuses on short "o" and -s plurals. Grammar will deal with action parts of sentences.
For Math, we will be focusing on skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. We will also work more with numbers reviewing ordering, before, after and between as we target skipping on a number line (beginning addition and subtraction strategies).
In Science, we will be continue with magnets and Social Studies, will continue to focus on the five themes of geography.

Friday is the kickoff of football season and Mr. Shadinger is allowing Factory Shoals students and teachers to wear apparel /colors of their favorite football team (recreational, high school, college, or pro). On this day he is also allowing us to wear baseball caps as long as they are team caps. Please help us show our school spirit by participating!

!!New Teacher!!

Due to low numbers in the county, we have had to shift teachers around to different schools in order to save jobs and lower class sizes that are too large. In doing this, first grade lost Mrs. Austin, but gained former fifth grade teacher Samantha Duke. We hope everyone is as excited as we are to have her on our team!

This Week's Agenda and Reminders

In ELA/Reading we are reading Sam, Come Back! (p. 14-23)
Our grammar lesson for the week deals with forming sentences.
Our phonics lesson will focus on short “a” and final “-ck”.
In Math, we will be working with numbers (ordering, before, after, between, etc.)
In Science, we will be learning about magnets.
In Social Studies, will dicuss the five themes of geography.

The music teacher, Ms. Cecere, has asked that each child bring in a folder for music. Please try and do so as soon as you can.

Upcoming Week

The week of August 8-12 is our first full week of school. During this time, your child's teacher will be assessing him or her to see where they are academically as we begin our school year. You should expect to see regular homework the following week (August 15th). Please take the time to sit down and go over things sent home with your child so that we, together, can ensure a successful first grade year!

-2 boxes of 24 crayons
- 12 Glue Sticks

- 3 plastic 3-prong folders with pockets (one with holes on the side)
- 1 - ½ in. Binder with 2 pockets
- Sheet protectors
- Clear/Clear Front Plastic Pencil Pouch with holes on the side
- 1 Primary Composition Notebook(these are the kind with half picture, half handwriting pages)
- 2 spiral notebooks
- Dry Erase Markers (you can purchase the generic brand at any dollar store)
- 2 packs of pencils
- 1 box each of sandwich and gallon zip lock bags

- 2 containers of disinfectant wipes
