Agenda and reminders for the week of January 9, 2012

In ELA/Reading we are reading Jan's New Home.  
This story's phonics lesson focuses on -s and -es nouns and verbs.  The secondary phonics concept is r controlled or/ore. 
Grammar for this unit deals with verbs
*Review these concepts with your child by:
-having your child write sentences and circle the verbs

-having your child find verbs in TV commercials, on websites, etc.
-having your child find words with the long e and long i sound for y in magazines, newspapers, billboards, etc. and making a book with these new found words.

-making flashcards to read and repeat(spelling words, sight words, amazing words).

In Math, we will be focusing on measurement(length, weight, capacity, and time)
*You can review these concepts with your child by:
-having your child use paper clips, pencils, shoes, hands to measure objects.  Our standard calls for measurement with non standard units, but if you would like to practice with a ruler, that will better prepare them for grade 2

-utilizing xtramath.org  (for continued addition and subtraction help)
-utilizing starfall.com (which now has a math component)

In Science, we are focusing on weather and water(weather patterns, water cycle). 
In Social Studies, we will continue to talk about landforms and economics.
*Science Vocabulary: 
seasons, weather, water cycle, condensation, precipitation, evaporation
*Social Studies Vocabulary:
-scarcity, goods, services, wants, needs, spending saving
-mountain, valley, plateau, desert, plain, ocean, continent
